ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It is a disease that is close to my heart as my cousin’s husband was recently diagnosed with the disease. Approximately 6,000 people are diagnosed per year in the US, with veterans, such as my cousin’s husband, being approximately twice as likely to develop ALS. It is an incurable and terminal disease with no successful treatments. Most people die within 2-5 years after being diagnosed
